This blog marks the first entry on the website created using the rich text editing controls, a feature that's just tonight been added to the list and is now available for those using a Firefox or Internet Explorer browser. Can I get a hoo rah!! Sorry Safari, you'll have to wait until your 3.0 release since tinyMCE only supports the latest builds of webkit. Although tinyMCE is fairly straightforward to get working, making it coexist with all the other functionality on this site was quite a daunting task. Now I can bold, italicize, underline, and strikethrough content with the ease of a few simple button clicks. Those aren't the only options available, but they certainly make my life easier.

I've never been a huge fan of formatting content using HTML markup. In fact, unless you are the programmer, you shouldn't really have to deal with it especially if you are just a silly end-user like myself who wants things as easy as possible. I had considered and even tried implementing various rich text editors prior to today, but I quickly lost patience at the time and decided to simply go with using Textile via RedCloth.

As of today, rich text editing is supported for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Safari support is coming when version 3.0 out the door. Right now, the following sections of the site support the rich text controls:

  1. Articles
  2. Blogs
  3. User profiles

Don't like rich text and want to get at the code the old school way, no problem. Click the "Toggle Editor" link right below the textarea and you can toggle the controls off and on to your editing desires.

I haven't had anyone other than myself really test this yet, so there may be some bugs we need to work through. Please let me know if you experience any problems and as usual, try to do so via the feedback section.
